These days, the struggle to stick to numbers and a budget is a real thing in many people's lives. Growing up in a household where my mom stretched every coin without us feeling it, that impresses me still today. There is something to pen & paper despite all the online apps. What you write is what sticks. This old-skool system makes the whole process more conscious compared with filling out an excel sheet and close the laptop. To master your household budget successfully follow these three key steps to stay on track.

Have a system in place

As with many things at work or in life, keep things organized. This way you’ll always have an overview and know exactly what is where going on. It makes your daily life so much easier. It does not have to be complicated. Work with simple printable household budget planner or tracker templates and fill them out on a regular basis. Make it a habit like brushing your teeth.

  • Choose a certain day of the week to do it all in one batch or write all down the same day you’ve spend the money.

  • Store your budget planners in a folder and don’t put it too far away.

  • Collect your sorted receipts in a fixed place like a sheet protector, mason jar or a little storage box.

  • Write a separate grocery tracker to stay on top of your spending.

  • Don’t forget to track your dine-out expenses too, like the coffee on the go here and there.

Don’t feel silly or ashamed

Don’t fall in the trap of thinking that this is a path of poor people to handle money. No, it’s not. From Warren Buffet to the founder brothers of ALDI and from Tyra Banks to Ed Sheeran, all of them are still budgeting and giving themselves an allowance per month, according to their own statements. Sure, these allowances are probably higher than yours, but they started somewhere to get to that point and are still doing it.

  • There is a saying, ‘You learn how to save from the rich’. Think about that.

  • Be motivated and set reachable goals.

  • Wear your head up, stand straight and proudly follow the road you just lined out.

…and most important - Be consistent.

This phrase is one of the most meaningful in your whole life and it is the foundation for everything good to come. Although it is probably the most annoying you can hear, it’s the most important key to success.

  • Set your own routine, whether it’s a day of the week or an hour of the day.

  • Write your budget planner and tracker as they were your testament, don’t let things out.

  • Apply this point to every aspect of your life.
